Firewood

What type of wood should I choose for my heating?

Hardwoods (recommended):

  • Oak: Long and even burn, ideal for nighttime use
  • Beech: Excellent heat output, beautiful and stable flame
  • Charm: Very dense, intense and lasting warmth
  • Ash: Dries quickly, good value for money

Softwoods: Primarily used for kindling (birch, poplar)

Conifers: Avoid in open fireplaces (quick fouling), use only for starting the fire

Our advice:

Choose a blend of essences that is suitable for your device and your needs.

How do I calculate my annual wood requirements?

The needs depend on several factors:

Living area Main heating Auxiliary heating
80-100 m² 8-12 cubic meters 3-5 cubic meters
100-120 m² 10-14 steres 4-6 cubic meters
120-150 m² 12-16 steres 5-7 cubic meters
Factors influencing consumption:
  • Home insulation
  • Device type (efficiency)
  • Geographic area and climate
  • Setpoint temperature
What is a stere and how do you convert it?

One stere = 1 cubic meter of wood stacked 1 meter long.

For shorter logs, the apparent volume decreases:

  • 1 stere of 1 m logs = 1 m³
  • 1 stere of 50 cm logs = 0.8 m³
  • 1 stere of 33 cm logs = 0.7 m³
  • 1 stere of 25 cm logs = 0.6 m³
Attention :

These values are indicative. The actual volume depends on the stacking and shape of the logs.

What is the recommended moisture content for wood?

Ideal: ≤ 20% humidity

Why dry wood?

  • ✅ Better calorific value (+30 to +50%)
  • ✅ Easier ignition
  • ✅ Less smoke and pollution
  • ✅ Reduced creosote buildup (less risk of fire)
  • ✅ Improved performance of your device

Our wood: We guarantee a moisture content of less than 20% for all our deliveries.

How to check the humidity?

Use a wood moisture meter. A log must be split to measure the heartwood.

How can I properly store my firewood?

The golden rules of storage:

  • Elevate: Use pallets to avoid contact with the damp ground
  • Shelter: Protect from direct rain but allow air to circulate
  • Orientation: Facing south or southwest to benefit from the sun
  • Ventilate: Do not place directly against the wall (minimum 10 cm space)
  • Cover: Tarpaulin only on the top, never on the sides
Drying time:

Properly stored wood takes 12 to 24 months to reach 20% moisture content.

Granules & Pellets

What is the difference between pellets and granules?

The terms "pellets" and "granules" refer to the same product: small cylinders of compressed sawdust.

Technical specifications:

  • Diameter: 6 or 8 mm (check compatibility with your pan)
  • Length: 10 to 30 mm
  • Humidity: < 10%
  • Calorific value: ≥ 4.6 kWh/kg
  • Ash content: < 1%
What are the quality certifications?

The main certifications:

DINplus (Germany):

Very strict standard, guaranteeing superior quality. Requirements: moisture < 10%, ash < 0.7%.

ENplus (Europe):

European certification with different levels (A1, A2, B). ENplus A1 = premium quality.

NF Biofuel Pellets (France):

French standard equivalent to ENplus A1.

Our selection: We exclusively offer DINplus or ENplus A1 certified pellets.

How do I calculate my pellet consumption?

Approximate calculation for a heating season (October to April):

Formula: Surface area (m²) × Coefficient × Heating days × Power

Example for 100 m²:

  • Main heating: 100 m² × 0.04 t/m² = 4 tonnes
  • Supplemental heating: 100 m² × 0.02 t/m² = 2 tonnes
Indicative table:
  • House 100 m²: 2 to 4 tonnes/year
  • House 120 m²: 2.5 to 5 tonnes/year
  • House 150 m²: 3 to 6 tonnes/year
How should bags of pellets be stored?

Essential storage rules:

  • Keep dry: Protected from all moisture (garage, dry basement, shed)
  • On a pallet: Raise the bags off the ground
  • Keep away from heat sources: Minimum 1 meter
  • Ventilate: Maintain good air circulation
  • First come, first served: Use the oldest bags first
Important :

The pellets absorb moisture! A damp bag swells, disintegrates and loses its calorific value.

Stoves & Fireplaces

How to choose between a wood stove and a pellet stove?

Wood-burning stove:

  • ✅ Warm atmosphere with a view of the flames
  • ✅ Operating autonomy
  • ✅ Fuel cost generally lower
  • ❌ Regular manual charging
  • ❌ Slightly lower yield
  • ❌ Need for wood storage

Pellet stove:

  • ✅ Programmable (thermostat)
  • ✅ High yield (≥ 85%)
  • ✅ Automatic feeding
  • ✅ Cleanliness (less dust)
  • ❌ Electricity dependency
  • ❌ Cost of pellets
  • ❌ Fan noise
What power output should I choose for my stove?

Simplified calculation: Surface area (m²) × Ceiling height (m) × Coefficient

Coefficients according to insulation:

  • House very well insulated (RT2012): 0.025
  • Well-insulated house: 0.03
  • Moderately insulated house: 0.04
  • Poorly insulated house: 0.05

Example: House 100 m² × 2.5 m × 0.04 = 10 kW

Professional advice:

It's better to slightly undersize than to have too much power. An oversized stove will run at a low setting and get dirty faster.

Is it mandatory to have your chimney swept?

Yes, it's a legal obligation!

According to Article R. 2213-27 of the General Code of Local Authorities:

  • Two chimney sweeps per year for wood or coal heating systems
  • One chimney sweep per year for other fuels
  • One of the chimney sweeps must be carried out during the period of use.
Security :

A clogged flue significantly increases the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.
